Now, admittidly i am not a huge fan of art and my own critique is vague, yet still an opinion. I admire the tate itself as it is like no other gallery. Almost a playground. There is a certain disorder and lively presence, children run through oblivious to all, adults zig zagging from left to right. Its almost impossible to be rule breaking. But within these walls, in fact for this point im about to raise lets look at those walls of the 5th floor,"idea and object."
Now through walking around idea and object i walked out with a contrast of opinions, both insightful and awkward. The insighful event was coming accross the work of Jenny Holzer. This work consisted of a collage of A4 coloured paper, much like the shades and form of a post-it note. THe jaxtoposed A4 sheets filled a wall as big as a double decker bus, creating a powerful array of colours. The most interesting part was the message conveyed. As i am studying copy, this struck me as a very powerful example of how copy can be affective, aswell as stand alone. see examples:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_N8qt--scOmg/R8SEb-MJMiI/AAAAAAAAABc/etH3HTJzksM/s320/P77386_9.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5171403888213439010" />

SIMPLICITY OR BONE IDOL?
The question that left rotating in my mind is one i shall leave open and invited. Here are two images:
Image 1:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_N8qt--scOmg/R8SHXOMJMkI/AAAAAAAAABs/7mzOJEfs6dQ/s320/black+sqaure+wiht+blu.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5171407105143943746" />
Image 2

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_N8qt--scOmg/R8SH7-MJMlI/AAAAAAAAAB0/_9T6sAKd5zM/s320/sir+eduardo+paolozzi+sack-+o+sause.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5171407736504136274" />

The question that i asked myself is how image one, something so simple, even named black square with blue square. can have such a simple idea yet a huge role in the tate?? its not the fact of whether i like it or not? But just the idea of simplicity to its most singular form. On the othr hand image 2 offers the complete opposite dinamics. so my question is done something simple necessarily mean its easier or less work compared to say inage two whereby there is more detail??

Guess the slogan?

As well as constructing an interview helping gain experience about the subject copywrite, I have been looking at copy itself. To understand how to write successfully, using powerful termonolgy i have been looking at slogans and qoutes.I find that qoutes are profoundly the key exam of how copy can be carried as power. The amount of people that refer to qoutes like a personal advert. For example on facebook the author can add their favourite qoutes, projecting their views through the whit of others, much like the idea of an advert. To see how affective copy can be here are a few advert slogans, standing alone from any visuals. see how effective you think they are as copy alone.
Kellogg Company .................The best to you each morning
Kellogg's Rice Krispies......... So how is it that some words filter through us yet others can cast us away for hours. To answer this question bluntly, i do not know! However, In order to understand the arts of copyright i planned an interview on Friday 15th with Leif Kendall, a former advertising copywriter based in Shoreham. One of the key questions answered was " What makes a good copywriter?" This question proved to be split into three catogory's:
Curiosity, Business brain and Creativity. To break down these catogories i would like to refer Leif Kendalls blog where he has to written about the interview, As he to found the interview helpful, in terms of stepping back to founermental questions about copywrite. http://kendallcopywriting.co.uk/?page_id=24. ( interview recorded and put onto disk).
STRESSING THE BENIFITS- This i learnt through the interview as a term used in the industry of copyright advertising. The rule of thumb approaches the advertiser to direct the message to the user, rather than the product. What value would it be to promote all the technical values of a product when the user will not understand. It is therefore better to stress how it shall benifit the user, rather than how the product overrides other products.

DANDAD AWARDS 2008

"CREATE A COPY-BASED CAMPAIGN PROMOTING THE IDEA OF REALLY LISTENING AS OPPOSED TO JUST HEARING"
To achieve the brief above I shall focus on the fundermental element; "copy-based." Copywriter Definition:

The "copy" in this case means the words that a user will see when
visiting a web site or using a software application. A lot of people
undervalue the work of a copywriter and usually opt to write their own
content. However, a good copywriter can transform otherwise boring text into
catchy and informative text that can have an immediate impact on the
bottom line.

Unlike a technical writer whose work is intended to inform, a
copywriter is striving to persuade. For example, a copywriter would write an ad
designed to sell a big-screen TV, while a technical writer would write
the operating manual to tell you how to use it.

The fundermental element is to concentrate on the written text of the advert. I shall have to deliver a PURSASIVE caption, concentration on visuals to enhance the written caption.

Research to follow:
Define HEAR and LISTEN, origins, meanings, other languages
HEAR VS LISTEN
Slogans
contact a copy-writer
create audio recording of slogans, test the effective whit of slogans through hearing rather than seeing (visuals)
Previous copy based Dandad awards
LAyout of dandad awards book- copy-based
cllients interests
target audience...

The key issue towards this project is to keep things simple and conceptual. From previous work and discussion towards the D&DA awards 2008, it is evident that succession seems to show through following the brief, keeping ideas simple and following the origions of the considerations and target audience.

INSTALLATION ROOM LAYOUT AND EQUIPMENT

Below is the designed look and feel of the installation room in terms of space and layout. However, For myself the day has proved to be rather productive. Mike Blow and I went through several ideas I have developed involving the rorschach test and both agreed it's an interesting subject to stick to, but a digital ink blot test designed by the user could be quite bland and also tricky to develop for such a limited interactive. So, after discussion and a contrast of colourful thoughts I have succesfully developed a concrete idea! The new improved idea is an interaction rorschach installation piece. Ok, the room is slit equally into two halves. One halve is for the viewer, the otherside, for now is an open space where the user is not permitted. The user walks around the room, the user is picked up by a webcam pointing from the ceiling. THe webcam picks up the movment of the user, where by it then follows the users steps (trail) by leaving ink blot images where ever the user steps, creating a inkblot pattern through the users footprints. The other halve of the room then mirrors the exact same pattern the user has printed through their steps, creating a similar looking inkblot. The user can then see the image they have created not knowing that it has been mirrored in the other side. Therefore they have produced there own ink blot!

Rorschach Game

So over the holidays i have been reading about the history of the rorsc test and possible outcomes of how to create a computerised version with online tutorials.(http://library.creativecow.net/articles/thompson_bob/ink_blot_test.php) Previously on my blog my idea was to make the story (see last post) However i am concerned that this idea is not interactive enough. So from looking at the history of Herman rorschach (inventor of test) i read that his ideas were inspired by an early game in the beginning of the 20th cenetury called, Klecksographie, otherwise known as blotto game, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blotto_games) it was also a game where you could design your own ink blots and predict what they were. So, this would be great to try and make an interactive blotto game designed and played digitally. However, i have to work out how to do this???

A different kind of interactive story?

First of all i hope everyone had a nice christmas! My developing idea is quite lateral, its the idea of an interactive story using Rorchsach's images (see below).I want to take one of his images and animate the one image to tell a story, the story will narrate the different meanings the ink blot conveys. The interactive part involves the way in which people have interacted with the test and what they have seen. It involves the difference in the way people percieve things. So, in short whatever people see from this one image i will turn into an animation where by the user watch's the transformation of all meanings.

My Designed Ink blot image, not to be used in animation, this image was designed purely for experimentation and portfolio purposes.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_N8qt--scOmg/R3bhz8OMCMI/AAAAAAAAAA8/6U7xSrZYVHg/s320/flat.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5149551506399955138" />

Digitalise Rorschach

I need to think of ways of how i can blend the use of digital design with the ideas of Rorschach? Dan and i had a great discussion that has given me great direction towards this project. I've been looking at the psychology of social interaction, the ways we react in social interaction, psychology of colours and the ideals of constuctivism and functionalism. John Burger's, ways of seeing and Art and Illusion, GOMBRICH E.H are proving to be really helpful texts towards this subject, Dan also recommended Perception of the mind, ED DE BONO. The most helpful information was learning about the RORSCHACH TEST. The Rorschach inkblot test is a method of psychological evaluation. Psychologists use this test to try to examine the personality characteristics and emotional functioning of their patients. It was proved to be very popular and i am going to steer very close to the principles of the test and carry out alot of research as to how the tests our anaylsed, types of outcomes, colours used, meaning of drawings e.t.c

Below is an example of the types of images used and possible outcomes the user might see.

Plate I

This is a black and white card, often described as looking like a mask or the face of a fox or wolf. I want to look at the way in which we interact with each other. I want to look at sterotypes, judgement, gender, disabilities. The way we instanlty judge someone through the way they interact diffently, whether their clothes are different or colour of their hair. I would like to do my interactive work on a performance art piece by filming peoples initial reactions by the way i interact with them. For example i remember when caprice(the model) appeared on a tv documentry where she agreed to walk around with a face impairment caused by a severe burn, now obviously this was all done by make up and caprice's face was quite dis-figured.She was barely reconginsed as caprice, but more to the point it was interesting how the public interacted with her. Some would look in dispear, others tried there best to be polite and act like they didn't notice, while other's stared from a distant. So, obviously i dont have a make up artist, but i do have face paint, Which brings me to the idea of painting my face in an usual way and walking around brighton hotspots, filming the publics reaction, going into sainsbury's or queueing for the bank. I want to see the way in which people interact diffently to things they do not instantly recognise or what is considered to be different.

The Burble

The Burble is a massive structure reaching up towards the sky, composed of approximately 1000 extra-large helium balloons each of which contains microcontrollers and LEDs that create spectacular patterns of light across the surface of the structure. The Burble is held down to the ground by the combined weight of the crowds holding on to the handle bar. They may position it as they like. They may curve in on themselves, or pull it in a straight line - the form is a combination of the crowd's desires and the impact of wind currents varying throughout the height of the Burble.
As people on the ground shake and pump the handle bars of the Burble, they see their movements echoed as colours through the entire system. Thinking outside the box...

Right so After Mike Blows Presentation about how types of sensors, How they can be used and ways in which we could use them for interaction i decided that the gaming idea was boring and i wanted to develop something thats different and realised that this brief is in fact quite generous to opportuniy. So... I am now looking at how we have become so depended on interaction, by means that we interact with everything without realising, our time of reaction is quicker than a heartbeat, it seems we no longer stop to think. Even when browsing a website we are so used to a structure that has been pshyhology set to the way our eyes follow a certian structure in which we do obey. So i want to test this action, I want to see how society has become depended on interaction through familiarity. I've been reading Art and Illusion, E.H GOMBRICH, reads about the psychology of pictorial representation. For example when we draw a coin it is drawn by the way we see it resting on our palm, so we draw it to that scale, when do we draw a huge circle for a coin? Other types of reearch will be illusions and semiotics and symbols. Another idea towards symbols an signs is to tell a story purely through image and see what outcomes it produces.

Also See Link For some cool stuff to do with interacting with sound. Well my initial idea was to construct a series of games on flash and deliver them through a website so i've been looking at a series of flash game tutorials to see how hard it would be to make the games and what type of games are avaliable, almost like keeping up to date with flash fashion. The webiste http://www.flashperfection.com/categories/Flash-Tutorials-Flash-Games-Tutorials-/page3.html was very useful an full of great tutorials. It also lead me to other ideas such as:

An interactive story

text game

fortune teller ( quite fun)

the simon game (see link below)

creating talking pictures, hidden speech bubbles on famous pictures, for example you could have a picture of mona lisa and when the mouse is rolled over the picture then a speech bubble comes up saying something like " you really think this looks like im smiling" or "My name isnt actually mona" so taking serious iconic art with tongue and cheek.

FLIP THE SCRIPTS... Interaction?
This project is about attempting to get students to extend the perceptual boundaries of what interaction and technology can achieve.

Main contextual points from brief:

It is interactivity that separates the new from old

The ability to control our experiences

New forms of empowerment

We are merely operating within the bounds of constructed environments

My initial reaction towards this brief is to work with flash and see what types of interactive games and tutorials are avalaible and what is currently being delivered in the flash gaming world. For individuals with learning disabilities (LD) and/or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD), even organizing a trip to the grocery store can be trying, as it requires putting together a grocery list, locating house and/or car keys, and finding one’s checkbook, debit card, or enough cash to pay for purchases.
This article will explain how the characteristics of LD and AD/HD may present challenges for kids who are learning to plan and prepare meals. I will also offer strategies for teaching your child the various skills involved in meal preparation, from planning a menu through kitchen clean-up.
Meal Planning
Some people enjoy planning a meal; others find it a chore. The process of planning a balanced and tasty meal requires imagination, a basic understanding of nutrition, a sense of whether the meal being planned is within the limits of one’s budget, and the ability to obtain the necessary ingredients.
The table below illustrates some of the ways various characteristics of LD and AD/HD can result in challenges to meal planning.

http://www.schwablearning.org/articles.aspx?r=990

KITCHENS THE PLACE TO BE!

Why is that in every household the kitchen is the busiest place? at one point or another every member of the household will be romaging the kitchen. Why? Because your family probably spends more time there than in any other room in the house. And, even if they don't stop here, they at least pass by the kitchen several times a day as they enter and leave the house. What's more, it's a comfortable place where people like to entertain, read the news, and surf the Internet. For each and every activity you might perform in the kitchen, there's a piece of technology that can dramatically enhance the experience. Fireworks!

Sooooooo.... been a while, but that isn't to say i haven't been busy. Progression is at full speed, the idea of an interactive cookbook has had many positive results and my research is really coming along. So, "what is an interactive cookbook?"

INTERACTIVE COOKBOOK:

"TRADITIONAL VAULES VS MODERN CONCEPT"

Inter-cooking is an interactive way to become familiarised with a healthier, educating way of cooking. It’s the perfect kitchen partner, with inter cooking there is no need to worry about space, its lightweight frame and thin design allows the product to either neatly rest on its accompanied stand or simply sit in its given place. But wait there’s more…. worried about turning those crisp pages, well no need. Another great dimension to inter cooking is that there are no pages; in fact you don’t have to batter an eye lid. Inter-cooking works on an interactive system where by the user is navigated through dictation.

The progress of computer technology into everyday consumer applications makes possible new applications that interact with people in their very own homes, helping those complete everyday tasks and acquire new skills. Inter-cooking is to help entice healthier cooking and promote a growing interest when exploring food.

An example of the look and feel of the interface for Interactive Cook book. (cook Guide)

SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS:

Interactive cooking isnt just another gadget to look aethetically pleasing in the kitchen and show of a gadget (well partly). Interactive cooking has many social benifits, One of the main health concerns in Britain at the moment is obesity, see link to read into issue:( http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml;jsessionid=BCJTHSO4A5T43QFIQMFCFGGAVCBQYIV0?_DARGS=/core/lowerHeaderBarWideFrag.jhtml) Obesity is a major concern, highlighting that our diet and nutrition has no balance, Interactive cooking will suggest relative healthy menu's containing ingredience that helps towards five-a-day. In fact to help guide the user it would be nice to use a system like big supermarkets are doing, called the"traffic light" system.

label shown on packaging, instantly highlighting how

healthy the product is: Green-Healthy, Red-Bad!

OTHER IMPLICATIONS:

Breadwinner- Modern day, both parents or partners tend to go to work, time constraints on cooking.

educating-learn cultural dishes and imporve levels of cooking

Tv-dinners-get rid of anti social 2 minute cook time dinners, watch neighbours in front of the Tv. Bring back tradition a well prepared and worked meal set around a table, labels discussion and social joy. Families should interact with eachother, time has become a sin on relationships.

Voice-over: Diffenret people respond to certain tones, important to use a voice that is universally pleasing.

Taylorism

expert system- concludes imformation and delivers a set idea

intelligent environment

Intelligent furniture- intelligent fridge: http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/features/2129691/recipe-success-kitchen-future

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://naomiknight.blogspot.com/2007/11/5th-november-fireworks.html' title='5th November!!! The links and people i have found to be the most helpful are:

Pcmag.com

E-ink, (search google)

intel in macs (looking at the gadgets, for example the new mac can track flights at real time.. The macs also have a i-translator, allows the user to type a word, say in English and turn it into another language of the users choice: [type]Hello, [turn to french], Bonjour. This could be a problem when it comes to the future as language teaching could decline due to the intelligence of computers.

about.com

Bill gates future theory: Primarily Bill gates underlines a parallel between the popularity of the mobile phone and the computer concluding to a plausable outcome that the two medias will find it very hard to meet in the middle.Bill Gate's predicts the phone will become highly adaptable, replicating the modes of a P.C by its forever growing wide, high defintion screen and its feature-like p.c spec. In short, why have a huge p.c when in theory you can carry it round in your pocket? Quite an interesting debate, personally i think a little drastic but completely understand the underlining point that the future seems to be obsessed with minimalisation.
http://www.microsoft.com/Presspass/exec/billg/speeches/2007/05-16-2007CEOSummit.mspx

Independent interview with Bill Gates, questioning the future-http://news.independent.co.uk/media/article352292.ece

www.btplc.com/innovation/news/timeline/ (very intersting insight to the future)

Jon maeda-I know micheal promoted his work, personally i found it interesting but at the same time i was a bit confused about the logic of some of his ideas?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://naomiknight.blogspot.com/2007/10/thursday-18th-october-links.html' title='Thursday 18th October.
